"ASHES TO ASHES...
DUST TO DUMP"

September 11, 2005 -- Relatives of 9/11 victims rallied yesterday against two projects they maintain would dishonor their loved ones' memories.
More than 500 protested at Ground Zero against the International Freedom Center, which they say would divert attention from the day's gravity.
And at the downtown Marriott, a group calling itself World Trade Center Families for Proper Burial blasted a plan to turn Staten Island's Fresh Kills landfill where human remains were sifted from Ground Zero debris into a public park.
The Freedom Center museum admittedly plans to depict struggles for freedom around the world. Some see that as inappropriate.
"These are important stories to tell elsewhere, not at America's memorial," said Jack Lynch, whose son, firefighter Michael Lynch, died on 9/11.
The museum was one of two chosen over a year ago to occupy space set aside for cultural exhibits near the planned "Reflecting Absence" memorial.
But the other, the Drawing Center, withdrew last month under pressure from victims' kin, and city officials want the International Freedom Center to respond to the families' objections before its place at the site is assured.
While a mediator was recently recruited, International Freedom Center Chair Tom Bernstein and Vice Chair Paula Berry who lost her husband on 9/11 responded yesterday with a statement that read, in part:
"We respect those family members who believe that the World Trade Center site should be limited to the memorial and memorial center museum, even as we and other family members believe that a living memorial, reflecting our common resolve to preserve freedom, should also have a place on this sacred ground."
